Where are all the superstars?
In a market that is reporting high unemployment it’s interesting to analyse the quality of current job applications and note that there is a serious shortage of quality retail managers across NZ. Application numbers have certainly increased but it would appear that many staff are staying put.

Hi, Having worked in retail for 15 years as well as owned my own restaurant, I can express my disappointment with the standard of support and training given to employees by management/owners. There will always be a shortage of sales people who are able to step up to management as long as they do not feel valued as members of a team, are not rewarded for extra efforts and a culture of job protection by middle management prevents encouragement and training of younger staff. A shift in focus, especially by smaller firms, is needed to address this problem. Even if sales tigers are treated like monkeys for long enough, they will perform like monkeys.
