The NZ hospitality industry sad to say good bye
Otto Groen moved to New Zealand in the early 1950’s. He pioneered for the hospitality industry and was the first restaurateur in the country to be granted a license to serve liquor in his retaurant ‘The Gourmet.’ Groen also brought a new array of flavours into the limited NZ market.
Through out his time Groen had many successes in the industry. On top of leading the way to having a glass of wine with dinner, he also opened popular restaurants and helped NZ to open the Japanese market up to our imports. His hard work, enthusiasm and skill earnt him a Queens Service Medal - the first to be awarded to a Dutch New Zealand - for his contribution to the hospitality industry.
Groen then lead one of NZ’s top hospitality schools - NSIA. (For more information, please see http://www.nsia.co.nz/net/ )
The hospitality industry has suffered a huge loss with the recent passing of Otto Groen, an industry legend whose pairs only have fantastic things to say about him. He will be missed by all that have met him.
