Newmarket Viaduct Diversions

The roads will be closed for up to 36 hours this weekend, what does it mean for retailers?

Throughout the weekend of the 4th and 5th of September, the southbound lanes will be closed between Gillies Ave and Greenlane. If you were thinking about driving through here on the weekend - think again! Thousands of cars will need to be diverted to allow for the final touches to be made on the road. If you can avoid the area, or postpone your travel, it will avoid a lot of frustration.

As a whole, the development looks like it will be positive. However, with cars being told to keep away from areas such as Newmarket - retailers will be missing out on much needed sales over the diversion period. The worst part being that this weekend is Father’s Day - a day where retailers expect to see high sales with a lot of last-minute gift buying.

If you were thinking of heading into Newmarket - you still can! The train will still be running directly into Newmarket, and it will still be possible to get in by car aswell (but expect delays).
