What’s going on with NZ employment as we head into recovery after the recession?
NZ may be slowley making it’s away out of the recession, but what does this mean for employment stats in New Zealand? A recent feature article on Retail Trends from the New Zealand Retailers Association looks into it.
The NZ labour market is picking up, with some noticable convincing increases to employment. According for the Retail Associations stats, there has been a 15,000 drop in the number of unemployed - an encouraging number, with retail being on of the industries on the growth end.
What could possibly be bad about the economy picking up? Well, as unemployment drops employers find it harder to find staff and that leads to a pressure to increase wages. According to the June QSBO skilled labour is already becoming harder to find. Within the retail sector, it has been reported that, for the first time since 2008, skilled worked are hard to find.
The market constantly looks back on 2007 - a year with intense shortages. It looks like reporters are confident we won’t be seeing such a difficult market this time around.
Sales Around the Country
Retail sales are increasing - with a 1.7% increase on the same time last year. Sales volumes were up for department stores, furniture, clothing and footwear, with the largest increase being in sales. By region, Auckland and Waikato have had the strongest growth over the past year.
