
The winner of the 2009 Retail Modern Apprentice of Year Award, announced at the New Zealand Retail Association’s National Conference, was Emma Coakley from Auckland.
Emma (20) works at Hallensteins in LynnMall in New Lynn.
Retail Institute Chief Executive, John Meeuwsen, congratulated Emma saying the 12 regional finalists were selected from a large number of dedicated achievers.
“The award recognises the hard work these apprentices have put into their retail careers. The aim of the apprenticeship scheme is to improve the professionalism of retail workers, the level of service they routinely provide and to attract the best and brightest young people to the industry.”
Regional winners were also announced at the conference. They were selected from three finalists in each region. The regional winners were:
• Emma Coakley (Hallensteins) Upper North Island
• Corena Harley (Placemakers, Hamilton) Middle North Island
• Andrew Ford (Mitre 10 Mega, Wanganui) Lower North Island
• Ameila Biggs (Paper Plus, Nelson) South Island:
The national winner received an Outward Bound learning experience. The regional winners will be challenged to complete the National Certificate in Retail, Level 4 at no cost.
The finalists were selected after a mystery shopping process conducted by Market Pulse International. The criteria were excellent customer service, clear communications and extensive product knowledge.
The Retail Modern Apprenticeship is a work-based training programme run by the Retail Institute for workers in the retail sector aged between 16 and 21. It aims to improve the service and professionalism of retail workers and attract the best and brightest young people to the sector.
The Retail Institute is New Zealand’s Industry Training Organisation for everyone working in retail and distribution and works with these industries to set standards for people working in these sectors as well as to develop qualifications and training materials for employers and employees.
